TFLTA is hosting a summer workshop!

June 12, 2015
Father Ryan High School

TFLTA is offering its first ever one-day summer workshop.

The Proof Is in the Portfolio: Teacher Effectiveness and Student Growth through Proficiency-Based Learning

The stakes have never been higher in teacher evaluation than today, especially in Tennessee. This workshop will explore proficiency-based learning that addresses the NCSSFL-ACTFL Can-Do Statements and WorldReadiness Standards for Learning Languages. We will also examine the peer-juried student growth portfolios being implemented in lieu of standardized test scores. Come explore proficiency-based learning and this exciting new method for evaluating teacher effectiveness and what steps you can take to join the process. The Shelby County World Language program in Memphis, TN is a state leader in proficiency-based learning. Take advantage of this one-day workshop by three Shelby County teachers. This workshop is coordinated and presented by Paul Jennemann, department chair at Whitehaven High School and curriculum lead and lead portfolio reviewer for Shelby County schools, with the help of Daphne Warren and Susan Satar from White Station High School.

The registration postmark deadline is June 5.

Danke, Sewanee, for a wonderful Frühlingsfest!

On Saturday, March 7, 2015, Sewanee’s German department hosted Frühlingsfest, the Tennessee AATG’s annual competition and celebration of student achievements. Students from schools in Nashville, Cleveland, Knoxville, and Kingsport showed their knowledge of German language and culture in events throughout the day. In the morning, students performed skits and songs, recited poetry, and competed in a vocabulary bee. The highlight of the morning was the karaoke competition led by Jana Engle from Dobyns-Bennett High. After a Schnitzeljagd (scavenger hunt) around the center of campus, teams from each school went head to head  for trophies in a language quiz bowl and a culture quiz bowl.  Between the rounds, everyone enjoyed looking at the entries in the art events and tasting the student-made treats in the baking competition. The day concluded with prizes awarded to individual winners and the overall champions, Hume-Fogg High in Nashville. The event ran smoothly thanks to the help of the teachers and chaperones from each school, graduate students from Vanderbilt, and Sewanee students.  The list of individual winners will follow shortly.

Frühlingsfest update!

Dear German Teachers,

Frühlingsfest is just a few weeks away!  I've already heard from 3 schools and hope to hear from many more before the deadline on February 20.  Trophies and ribbons are here, so sign up your students and start learning the poems to recite or create a skit! There is something for every student at every level.

Later this week, I'm meeting with students here at Sewanee to begin our final preparations. We are expecting some graduate students volunteers from UT-Knoxville and Vanderbilt to help on the day of the festival. Are your students ready to challenge these students in the Goethe Bowl?

I'm happy to answer any questions, you might have. My contact info is below.

schöne Grüße aus Sewanee,
