Danke, Sewanee, for a wonderful Frühlingsfest!
On Saturday, March 7,
2015, Sewanee’s German department hosted Frühlingsfest, the Tennessee
AATG’s annual competition and celebration of student achievements.
Students from schools in Nashville, Cleveland, Knoxville, and
Kingsport showed their knowledge of German language and culture
in events throughout the day. In the morning, students performed skits
and songs, recited poetry, and competed in a vocabulary bee. The highlight
of the morning was the karaoke competition led by Jana Engle from
Dobyns-Bennett High. After a Schnitzeljagd (scavenger hunt) around
the center of campus, teams from each school went head to head for
trophies in a language quiz bowl and a culture
quiz bowl. Between the rounds, everyone enjoyed looking at the
entries in the art events and tasting the student-made treats in the
baking competition. The day concluded with prizes awarded to individual
winners and the overall champions, Hume-Fogg High in Nashville. The event ran
smoothly thanks to the help of the teachers and chaperones from
each school, graduate students from Vanderbilt, and Sewanee
students. The list of individual winners will follow shortly.
